Gregory Baker was born in Moscow, Maine, in 1902. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1924 with a bachelor's degree in forestry and received a master's degree in forestry from Yale in 1939. He joined the faculty at the University of Maine in 1935 and was a professor of forestry there until his retirement in 1967.
